Matt’s work is mostly based on music. His treatment of the clay -like the music he listens to- is visual, tactile and active. He often gets so wrapped up in a certain musician or song that he scribbles various lyrics on the piece he’s working on. Whether it's one album or a handful of songs, Matt typically only listens to one artist over the course of a new work cycle.
Matt’s love of water, fish, fossils, and stone also strongly influence his work and are visually prevalent in each piece. Wood-firing gives the pieces with a liquid-like finish as a result of random flame patterns and molten wood ash deposits. Matt is a native of Middle Tennessee and graduate of ETSU with a Degree of Fine Arts and concentration in Ceramics.
Wood fired cups by Matt McAlister. Flames and ash travel through the kiln leaving distinctive markings on the pots. Wood firing can be unpredictable and labor intensive. These cups are wonderful!
