Cym Doggett is a self-taught artist whose work focuses on engraving simple lines and dots into metal to capture the complexity of small pieces of nature. Much of his work is a close, magnified examination of a subject exploring the unique structure responsible for its place and survival in its habitat. Doggett attributes this fascination with the wild to growing up in a small town and spending much of his time in the woods with only his imagination to expand the boundaries of that young world. His love of art has grown naturally from this wonderment at the life around her.
Doggett utilizes various rotary tools, engravers and grinders to transform hard, cold metal into representations of the depth and texture. He focus primarily on the negative space of the piece as he plans the incisions needed to capture his vision. Doggett’s goal is a loose composition paired with a controlled flow of lines. The ultimate goal of his work is to, “…Convey in each piece a visceral glimpse into the complex, beautiful and unique inhabitants of our common world.”
His work helps assure that he continually and consciously pauses to soak in the complexities and beauty making up every unique piece of nature’s puzzle.
