Functional Pottery

Anderson & Jessie Bailey

Made by Hand Ceramics

Bean and Bailey ceramics is a southern duo producing small-batch functional porcelain pots. Our contemporary slip-cast ceramics address the needs for containing, serving, consuming, displaying, growing, and showing. We use colored porcelain slip to construct both subtly organic forms, as well as faceted vessels inspired by natural crystals and gems.

Anderson Bailey has been involved in the clay world since he was a brambling teenage boy. He learned to hone his skills along the way working for other artists and craftspeople. Since moving to Chattanooga he has started working full time on making and selling handmade functional ceramics. Jessie Bean has been working with her hands since she was a young lady.  After years of working for other glass artists, seamstresses, and farmers, she realized her need to be creative for a living. Their mutual interests in process and aesthetics have brought them together to create a product line of slip cast functional wares.

All items are made in Chattanooga, TN in our small ceramic studio.  Please contact us if you would like to visit.

My impulse to create pottery stems from the enjoyment of working with my hands and using something I’ve made. I want the end result to be a visceral impulse from the user to engage it, use it, and feel comforted and amused.

The son of an architect and a botanist, I feel I’ve been informed throughout my childhood by contemporary design and fanciful decoration. This emerges in my work as I sketch out graphic silhouettes of forms, embellished with simple motifs. When translating sketches into dimension, I let the marks inherent to my process show, adding movement to the forms and sustaining an aesthetic throughout my work.
