A passion for art was instilled in me at a very young age by my mother, an art teacher/artist. From as early as I can remember, she taught art classes out of our home and off and on throughout all my life.
All through elementary school and high school I took painting, drawing and other assorted art/craft classes through a wonderful home school arts enrichment program.
When I got to college, I wanted to pursue art. Being too scared to start out as an art major, I did my first two years in housing and design (“applied art”). There was not enough hands on creativity for me. I didn’t want to just draw pictures of beautiful rooms. I wanted to create the items IN the rooms!
The summer after my sophomore year, I married my best friend and in the fall of 2007 we both took our first craft classes at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, TN. It was then that I began my journey into the world of fibers.
What’s funny to me now is that initially I hated weaving. It was too complicated and too hard to understand all that math! Not to mention it took FOREVER! Somehow I got talked into taking another weaving class the next fall and that was when I fell madly in love with the beautiful craft of weaving. Controlling every aspect of a piece of cloth from color, pattern, texture, thickness, drape, etc. It was irresistible to me. The math started to make sense and the following spring (2008) I bought my first loom.
I have been weaving ever since and I have loved every moment of it! I weave all of my work on a 4 harness, 6 treadle Macomber loom. I weave with natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool and silk as well as man-made natural fibers such as rayon, bamboo and Tencel.
I love to weave beautiful hand woven scarves and shawls that feel simply luxurious next to the skin. I also love to create beautifully patterned and completely functional home decor such as place mats, table runners, napkins, tea towels and pillows. I strive for excellent craftsmanship in each piece I make. I believe quality of life is higher when surrounded by beautiful hand made art.
I firmly believe that any talent I have was given to me by my Creator and my craft endeavors are one of the many ways that I attempt to bring glory to my Father God. I believe we are called to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. I choose to do that by creating beautiful things with my hands.
